On a busy Saturday the bottleneck is almost never people — there are already two or three of you on the floor. It's that only one of you can take money, because only one of you is standing at the terminal.
A second terminal fixes that for about four hours a week and sits idle for the other hundred and sixty. Which is why most shops never buy one, and just let the queue happen.
The phones are already in your staff's pockets, already on your wifi, and already better cameras than any barcode scanner you'd buy. They just weren't tills.

EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39, QR and DataMatrix, read on the device with no round trip per scan. Bluetooth and USB scanners work too — and you can always type a code when a label is scuffed, because a cashier who can't key one in reaches for a calculator.
Cash, card, split or something else, with change worked out as you type what they handed over. Quick-cash buttons round up to the notes people actually give you, because typing $20.00 mid-queue is the slowest part of a cash sale.
Email it on the spot, or print to your counter printer. No paper roll needed at a pop-up, a market stall or the second till you just opened by the door.
Somebody's forgotten their wallet and gone to the car. Park the basket, serve the queue, pick it back up on any device. It doesn't block the till.
Look the sale up, choose which lines are coming back and how many, give a reason. Stock returns and the ledger reverses — a partial refund is a first-class thing, not a workaround.
Open with a float, record cash in and out during the day, close on a counted drawer. The over-or-short figure comes from the server, so nobody is doing arithmetic on a phone at midnight.
This is the difference between a phone ordering app and a phone till. Every sale rung on every phone moves the same inventory and posts to the same books as your counter — same costing basis, same tax, same receipt sequence.
So opening a till doesn't create a set of numbers to merge later. There is no export, no "the app says one thing and the till says another", and no Monday morning working out which device sold the last of something.
It also means the stock figure stays worth looking at. A count that only knows about sales made at one specific terminal isn't a count.

A weekend hire can ring sales all day without being able to refund. The server enforces it, so it isn't a matter of trusting the app.
Sign in once, then it's a thumb — and it re-locks if the phone is left face-up on the counter for a minute, because this app takes money and gives it back.
An unknown barcode can be attached to an existing product, or minted as a new one — but only by someone you've given that permission to, so nobody creates junk SKUs off a damaged label.
Properly set, not machine-substituted — switchable from the top bar rather than buried in settings, so a cashier who lands in the wrong language fixes it in one tap.
One numbering sequence across every till. A customer coming back with a phone-rung receipt is looked up exactly like any other.
There's one app and one listing. Which half you get is decided by the register you sign into — a retail register opens this till, a restaurant register opens a table floor with tabs and kitchen tickets. Most businesses only ever use one. A group that runs both a café and a dining room installs once.
